Thanks for contacting me. I certainly don't mind my work being in your gallery, but I don't make foxes on a regular basis so I can't promise to be a regular contributor.

OH MY WORD that feels like an eternity ago! Yes, that was me! I did that because there was a huge difference between the original and the Western version, and it seemed like a good idea to make a guide for it. Haha, wow. Memories!

I'm surprised you committed to a username for so long. XD

I guess thisisi also a suitable point to thank you, because you also had a page for the D-Terminal, and the code list your shared was the most detailed. It has been very helpful, even if I still cannot trust the power levels when battling my V-Pet against the D-Terminal.

I don't have anything to run away from, and I kind of like the continuity. I have other names I'm known by in different communities (Maya Remblai in Second Life which I also use as a pen name of sorts, my various characters in WildStar, etc) but they still link back to this name. It's a silly name I made up as a teenager, but I couldn't get rid of it if I wanted to. XD

I'm glad my old AD-3 page was useful. I'm pretty sure I still have my D-Terminal around here somewhere, too. Sadly I don't have my D-3 anymore. It was the sought after black one, and I ended up selling it eventually. I just don't have the space or the energy to maintain collections of stuff anymore, so I've sold off most of the pieces that had value. :/

Not usually, because it's hard to balance the value of both pieces, and then there are shipping costs involved.

Hi there, I was wondering how you figure out what price to put on your work?
Like I want to make needle felted ponies, and have no idea what sort of price range they would be worth

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SnowFox102 In reply to CSINorman [2014-06-09 20:03:42 +0000 UTC]

I use a minor variation of this formula on Etsy. I tweaked it slightly because my material costs are very low, but otherwise it's pretty much the same. It's not easy sticking to it, because I have a tendency to under price. But it's important to stick to it, because to under price isn't fair to you or other artists.

Hey there Maya! I recently started a group that is specifically for needle felted ponies, and I would absolutely love it if it you joined and maybe submitted some of your stuff there (I could do it for you so all you would have to do is approve it) which would be awesome, it would help my group grow a lot :3

I was also going to ask if you would like to be my co-founder, but I see that you already admin 3 groups, which is the limit, I think. But the offer for an admin position would always be there!

Anyway, thanks for reading this, and I would love to have some of your art in the group's gallery!

the-pink-dragon [2013-02-25 18:28:13 +0000 UTC]

This may sound like a very inane and hard to answer question, but if you could give me a little advice I would absolutely love it. You see, I've started making needle felted ponies (I've only been able to make two and a half until I can get more wool) and I'd really like to try making an armature for them because I think making them pose-able would be amazing.

My biggest question is how exactly you get the wool around the armature. I tried imagining it today, and I can't quite figure out how one would start. I know you use core wool on your ponies because it is more stiff, and I haven't worked with it before, but I have ordered some, so I don't know if it felts too much different than merino, but do you just... simply wrap it around the armature and felt it until it's stiff? Or do you maybe felt a bunch of flat-ish layers first and then wrap them around the armature? Is it very difficult to felt around wires? I'm just a beginner, and I stab myself all the time so I can imagine it would be very hard to not break a needle on the wires. One more question: does the armature help with balance? I made a Twilight Sparkle the other day with her front leg raised, and it was literally hell to get her from toppling over. I eventually had to put some little steel balls in her opposite back leg just to get her to stand up.

I realize that these are a lot of questions, and if you don't want to answer it's fine, I'm just very curious Thank you for taking the time to read this!

SnowFox102 In reply to the-pink-dragon [2013-02-25 19:41:41 +0000 UTC]

I recently made a video about putting the first bit of wool on an armature: [link]

Armatures don't add much balance, for me at least. I put steel shot in their feet if they have too much trouble, but I have yet to figure out how to make a pony that can rear. But the armature does enable you to pose them in such a way that they can balance in most poses.

As for core wool, I actually don't use it much anymore. It doesn't really affect my finished product in most cases anyway. The point of core wool is mostly to save cost, and I just buy wool that's inexpensive but soft instead.

Hope that helps.

the-pink-dragon In reply to SnowFox102 [2013-02-25 21:28:52 +0000 UTC]

That does help a whole lot, the video was very informative. I'm so sorry for asking so many questions, but I'm such a noob at this, but just one more. How did you put steel shot in the feet? I had to put two steel shot balls in Twilight's foot, but even then it didn't seem to help. I actually had to cut a hole with an exacto knife, cram them in there, and felt over it, but they aren't extremely secure :/ Plus, I think that two wasn't really heavy enough to balance her, but I think her big tail was enough to offset the weight. Do you have any special way of doing it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SnowFox102 In reply to the-pink-dragon [2013-02-25 22:04:08 +0000 UTC]

I sewed a tiny pocket to hold a few shot balls, and bound it to the armature with wire. But felt is tough stuff, you don't really need to do a lot to keep the shot in place. I think making the pocket helps though. I just wish I could find a weight the same size as the shot, but more dense. Fishing weights are heavier, but they usually contain lead. :/

I don't mind answering questions, I like to help when I can!

the-pink-dragon In reply to SnowFox102 [2013-02-25 22:34:27 +0000 UTC]

Huh, the pocket thing makes a lot of sense, especially with the armature. And yeah, I really wanted something more dense than steel shot but lead is definitely not an option. It'll make ya go crazy Thanks for the advice!

How do you get large needle felted things to look SO GOOD? I can't even get this ball to look good, you're so talented.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SnowFox102 In reply to McWeetbix [2012-11-26 01:00:05 +0000 UTC]

Hehe. It mostly comes down to practice, but the type of needle you use, the density of the felt, and the type of fiber do affect the outcome. I've found that finer fibers, like merino, tend to be lumpy at first so they require a little extra work to be smooth. It also helps to use a finer gauge needle once the felt has some body to it, and avoid poking so much that the felt becomes hard. Also, it helps to squish and roll the felt with your hands as though you were working with clay. That can help smooth things out.

Your work is great! There's a lot of detail in those tiny little figures, I like that.

Thanks for the tips <3 I think I've been focusing too much on making my pieces SUPER FIRM 'cause I thought I was meant to, maybe I shouldn't do that XD; And I'll invest in other sizes of needles!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SnowFox102 In reply to McWeetbix [2012-11-26 18:10:08 +0000 UTC]

Anytime. I've noticed that a lot of instructions for needle felting encourage you to make a piece really firm, but in my experience there isn't really a right or wrong way to do most things. My earliest posables were limited in their range of motion because the felt was too hard, and they could still be deformed by squishing them (which doesn't damage them, they can be squished back.) So now I make everything with some give, and things like tails are usually even softer. You can maintain posing ability nicely by regulating the depth to which you push the needle. If the core of the piece is mostly unfelted, but the surface is more firm, you can maintain the shape but still be able to move it. Sometimes I use a crown needle to do that.

On the subject of needles, I always recommend a 38 star for most work. I use those more than anything else. I do use a 36 triangle for strongly indented details, like ears or the line of a mouth, but the star can do that too. If you can only get one type of needle, go for a 38 star. The difference in efficiency between a star and triangle is huge. A 38 star moves about as much fiber as a larger triangle, but leaves a smoother finish because it's smaller. I've only seen star needles sold online though, never in stores.
