Hey there! What version of Blender do you use? You seem to make it look easy ^^Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Shroomworks In reply to LegendaryGriffin [2015-03-30 14:37:20 +0000 UTC]

I'm currently still using Blender 2.71 and have yet to update to 2.73. It might seem easy, but trust me,it's not. I've spend countles hours to learn how to use the program. Sure, learning how to make something simple out of a cube or cylinder is rather easy, but depending on what it is you want to model,it can become very complex very quickly, especially when you want/need to put in a lot of detail.

But modeling itself is not the most difficult thing,at least not for me. The most difficult part is texturing and especially the shader setups. There's a lot you can screw up there.
When unwrapping a model you need to precisely mark the seams, otherwise the textures will look funny. And to properly setup the shaders, you need to know what each node does and how to properly put them together to achieve the desired effect.

Another difficult thing to use are particle systems and the physic based simulations such as water, fire and smoke. It took me a considerable amount of time to learn how to work with particle systems and i still make very basic mistakes now and then.Β

But despite the steep learning curve,i think it's definately worth it.Β

LegendaryGriffin In reply to Shroomworks [2015-03-31 07:59:38 +0000 UTC]

I totally get that! I have modeled a decent looking griffin however the normal was opposite and made some parts look inside out. I figured it out, although it wont let all the normas be one way (Theres always a sneaky place where the shading looks wacko). But yeah, seams on character models are hard (especially when there is Β lag). Which comes to my next question...

How do you stop the lag? I seem to have difficulty with lagging problems since there are so many vertices. It keeps crashing and saying my graphics card can't handle it. Do you know a solution? I'm thinking of upgrading the g-card but it seems expensive...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Shroomworks In reply to LegendaryGriffin [2015-03-31 15:37:23 +0000 UTC]

To fix normals,go into edit mode and on the left hand side in the toolbar,go to the Shading/UVs tab and press "Recalculate". That should fix your problem with flipped normals.
If not,you can select the faces individually and hit the "Flip Normals" button in the same tab i mentioned before.

As for the slowdown/lag you're experiencing, are you using subsurface modifiers by any chance? If so,it's best to not set them too high, wheter it's in the vewport or during rendering. I had many cases where Blender refused to render an object or scene and crashed due to the subsurface modifier bein set too high for one or more objects.

As for graphics cards, they definately make rending a lot faster depending on what card you get. Also, ram and CPU speed play a big role as well, especially when you work with physics based simulations such as cloth, water, fire & smoke.

LegendaryGriffin In reply to Shroomworks [2015-04-01 05:46:24 +0000 UTC]

thank you!
Yes... I am using subsurface modifiers... at a high standard ^^' the problem is is that i added the modifier already (I think... gotta check that) And Thanks for the normals tip, it really helped out a lot
Yeah, I'm using hair particles and my computer hates it. Hopefully decreasing the subsurface modifier will help.

Thanks again

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Shroomworks In reply to LegendaryGriffin [2015-04-01 18:07:30 +0000 UTC]

You're very welcome and i'd really like to see your model

And as a tip: NEVER apply modifiers unless you really have to. It doesn't really matter how big the modifier list becomes,as long as everything is in the right order. That way you'll always be able to make small adjustments when needed. As for hair particles, yes they can be a real pain when it comes to rendering. You can reduce the amount shown in the viewport however,by decreasing the percentage in the particle settings.Β

Also, you can comb hair, though to be honest i've never done that myself before,so i do not know much about that.
