I actually do like the book. [: Which is funny, simply because I absolutely hated it when I first started reading it.
... and then I met Jack Merridew, and my life changed. I even started using Merridew as a name for myself. xD; So it's just kind of stuck with me.

Well, it's kind of like you. I decided to read it on my own and couldn't get through the first 50 pages. But just recently my English teacher made us all read it and I really enjoyed it

[WARNING: Wall of text! ;3; Just skip to the last paragraph! The rest is really extra. xD; I looove to ramble. Andlike, this is my interpretation, so... 
You know, everyone in my English class was asking me that same question. We were assigned a project to talk about one specific character from the book, in groups - my hand shot up for Jack, and I was the only one in my "group." D;
So it's like... He starts out as this pushy little kid - not inherently evil at all. He thinks he's so, so amazing. ;D "I can sing C sharp!" is one of his reasons for being leader.
... but he's actually scared. The boar that appeared - he wouldn't kill it, no way... Not at first. He was scared for himself and for it... He didn't want to take its life. Not originally. c:
But he adjusted to his surroundings over time. He got tougher because he had to, although inside he was still just a scared little boy. XD And hey, he never really faked being nice, unlike Ralph. D; So bonus points for him.
I love Jack Merridew because he got completely lost in his own reality. He needed to escape from the world he was in to create a life of his own, and it was perfect for him. He could be leader and have the others be even more scared than he was. I won't say that he's what everyone's like on the inside - I don't know how people are on the inside - but he's the one I could relate to the very most.
... C: Sooo, all that aside, do you have a favorite character from the book? XD;;

I see what you mean, I'm not exactly a Ralph fan either. Everyone thinks he's more than he is.
But the only think I found unsettling about Jack is that he didn't kill for survival, but he also enjoyed it. He killed people unnecessarily.
My favorite is Piggy
He was the most intelligent of the group in my opinion. Him or Simon.

... I was actually sad when they, uh. Well, I won't spoil anything for anyone who's reading these comments by any chance. D; But yes.
... and yes! Yes, you are completely right about Jack. That's also one of the reasons why I liked him though. [: (Haha, I know... The complete opposite.

Me too, I think for the whole chapter with the feast was the saddest to me. I wasn't too upset with the Piggy part at the end.
I tried not to spoil anything.. not too good at that, though. XD
