Actually, type design is all about balancing the regular space with the negative space. Not only for the general letter shape but also in the individual details of the letter. That's type design. Typography is how those letters relate to each other. So with modern type design you actually work with space/negative space on 3 levels. You need to make the stroke weight optically the same [1], you need to balance the letter itself [2] and you need to balance all letters in regard to each other [3]. That's in theory. It can be fun to break some of these rules though. For example, humanist/venetian typefaces (the very first typefaces) have very varied widths between individual letters. As you can see in Jenson ([link] ) letters like H and N are very wide while the B is very narrow. Biblon is a typeface which puts most of the weight on one side of the letters ([link] ). So you can definitely deviate from the basic rules as long as you do it consciously and consistently.

I told you about the weight build-up (or dark spots as I call them) where 2 or more strokes meet but I forgot to tell you how to fix this optical illusion. You can fix this by just reducing the weight of one or more of those strokes in the area where they meet but it's often a good choice to add a so-called ink trap. Nowadays we have pretty good printing techniques so the ink doesn't flow that much but in the letterpress days the ink would flow beyond the area of the letter. Here's an example: [link] As you can see besides becoming more fat, the areas with sharp angles become really tight and as you can see in the picture, the result is that the top of the letter is much too heavy. To fix this you add an ink trap as seen on the left of the picture. These square-like ink traps can also be used for the design rather than the function. It's a detail you can only see when using text at large sizes. Here's a more subtle ink trap: [link] What the designer did there with the K is in principle what you should do to fix this weight build-up. As you can see in the K the arm is thinner where it connects with the stem.

I actually make extensive use of ink traps β€” mostly subtle but in some cases I make it quite obvious as part of the type's personality. With my Dagon typeface I actually took this idea a step further. I wanted to create a strong, sturdy grotesque typeface with very high weight contrast near the stem. Here's a picture of Dagon: [link]

I also thought this interview with Ludwig Übele gave some good insights in various aspects of type design and type designers: [link]
