Would you consider it true that the protests by moderate Muslims demonstrating aainst Islamic terrorism and extremism are overlooked and uncovered in the media or that they don't make it to the headlines?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nahmala In reply to victauron [2016-02-18 02:54:36 +0000 UTC]

Yes, absolutely. There were a bunch of protests in the US by Muslims against terrorism that went unnoticed, some even right in front of the White House. Nobody heard about them except through Muslim news sources. Or worse, there was one protest AGAINST ISIS that American right-wing news sources tried to pass off as a protest SUPPORTING ISIS.

Working on applications for grad school assistantship positions.

Snowed in at college, working online with a human rights activist in Egypt on a campaign. Doing a bunch of projects, organizing a bunch of events, studying Quran, so busy aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh XP And school hasn't even started yet.

Are you already in college, or are you applying for outside scholarships along with applying to colleges?

I'm going sledding later with a guy from Bangladesh who has never seen snow until now... That is, if I can get to his place through this blizzard.

What kind of events do you organize?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nahmala In reply to FormsEquestrianFinds [2016-01-25 03:54:00 +0000 UTC]

I'm organizing campus events: bringing speakers like Muslim activist Amara Majeed and Rabbi Lee Weissman, doing a World Hijab Day campaign, multifaith worship services (off campus, here in Baltimore), etc.. I work a lot with the Muslim and Jewish communities in particular, trying to build bridges between them. I'm also trying to show movies about heroes of the Holocaust (like people who saved others from the Nazis) and teach Russian through film and conversation.

Also trying to find a way to deal with the rising tensions between pro-Israel and pro-Palestine students on campus. I'm caught in the middle as a Muslim of Jewish blood, so I kinda have to act as a peacemaker.

Which college do you go to?

I hope you get to lower your tuition costs. I was lucky enough to get a full academic scholarship, or else I wouldn't be at my school.

The one I'm currently trying to get approved is Enemy of the Reich: The Noor Inayat Khan Story. It's about a Muslim woman who sacrificed her life to combat the brutal reign of Nazi Germany. As for Russian movies, I've got Cheburashka (which is the cutest thing ever), a few war movies, and some American movies in Russian (ex. Anastasia).

My Facebook page is full of news. On dA, I try to educate people and spread news through art. Education is the best way to combat hatred and fear.

I currently attend a small, largely Jewish private school in Baltimore, Maryland.

What do you think of verses in the Quran that mention "killing unbelievers?"

Do you think it is often quoted out of context instesd of genuingly telling Muslims to attack non-Muslims?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nahmala In reply to victauron [2016-01-10 05:22:52 +0000 UTC]

It really is quoted out of context a lot. And sometimes the quotes people like to use are deliberately changed or even made up! For example, I saw somebody quote a violent verse from the Quran, cited Chapter 157, Verse 3. There are only 114 chapters in the Quran.

Everything has context. Some of the violent verses are speaking about the events of past battles, or the angels fighting on behalf of God, or even about violence committed AGAINST Muslims.

The whole "smite the unbelievers" thing talks about a specific circumstance. The Muslims and the Pagans had a peace treaty with each other, and the Pagans broke it and attacked. So it became war, and in war there is killing. But even then there are so many rules of war for Muslims, such as sparing women and children, sparing the ill and the elderly, sparing those who surrender, treating prisoners of war with dignity, sparing animals, etc..

Arminius1871 In reply to Nahmala [2016-01-21 10:53:02 +0000 UTC]

Some people here said, when there are verses that create missunderstandings and murderous groups like IS in every generation, why do most muslims not accept that they could just edit the Quoran and delete this "kill them" verses?

It seems to many people that muslims can of course be nice and peaceful, but only when they don´t follow their holy book 100%.

This is not meant as an attack, but as criticism.

In Europe Islam gets a worse and worse image, also because our countries have a huge migration problem and many fear they will outnumber the native people this century.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nahmala In reply to Arminius1871 [2016-01-22 03:51:35 +0000 UTC]

The Quran can never be changed. It is the pure word of God. It has been preserved exactly as it was given 1400 years ago.

We can follow the Quran 100% and still live peacefully. Most Muslims understand that each verse in the Quran has its context. There is context for the violent verses. They either refer to historical accounts of battles, wars that were happening at the time, the angels fighting battles, etc.. Some of the so-called violent verses that people love to quote even talk about violence AGAINST Muslims. Context is of the utmost importance for textual analysis.

Of course, there are the Muslims who don't understand context. This is where the problems come in. There really needs to be better education in the Muslim world. In places like Afghanistan, the people who are the lowest of their classes are designated by the schooling system to become religious scholars, while the better students go on to be doctors and such. With the worst and most incompetent students becoming the voice and mind of religion, it's not hard to see where things went wrong.

If you have any other questions, I can try and answer them, inshallah.

Dsim64 In reply to Nahmala [2016-11-12 16:08:34 +0000 UTC]

Is that a joke? Oh, and Islamic terrorists generally aren't poor or uneducated; in fact, they're mainly in the high middle class.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Arminius1871 In reply to Nahmala [2016-01-22 07:52:08 +0000 UTC]

I understand, yes I have other questions, and as always none of them are meant bad,
I just wanna know the truth and you can surely tell them.

I read Islam deivides the world in the house of peace (where Islam rules) and house of war (where Islam doesn´t rule yet).
Is it true, that the goal of Islam is, to islamize the whole world sooner or later? Some radical leaders of Islam say,
we will defeat the Europeans with our stronger birth rate and Allah will win. This are sentences of course that are
scary to many people. What do you say about that?

You say the Quran is the word of god, and what do you say about all the scientific discoveries? The universe, how old earth is,
that we are all just atoms? What if we find aliens, what is Islam saying about exoplanets and other life forms?
Why do islamic and religious wonder only happen 1400 years ago where angels appear and god talks to people,
but now where we could record anything and prove anything, nothing happens?

I don´t wanna be mean, but most people say religion is manmade, they´re legends that give you an identity and sense
in your life, but they´re only stories nothing else. Wouldn´t mankind live even better, if noone has a strong religion?

I know that is very directly, but anyone with a strong believe can stand this I guess^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nahmala In reply to Arminius1871 [2016-01-22 20:19:57 +0000 UTC]

Alright, there are a lot of questions here. I will try my best to answer them all.

The goal of Islam is not to "Islamize" the world. Do we want to spread the message of Islam? Yes. Would we be happy if there were many more Muslims in the world? Absolutely. Do we want to force people to convert to Islam? No. See Quran 2:256 "Let there be no compulsion in religion." Do we want all other religions destroyed or to die out? No. The Quran says that God deliberately made people from different walks of life with different beliefs. We are all supposed to learn from each other. (Oh, by the way, "Allah" is just the Arabic word for "God.")

Muslims do have the highest birthrate in the world. Muslims also gain the most converts each year, enough converts to greatly outnumber the people who leave Islam. By 2040-ish, it is predicted that Muslims and Christians will have equal numbers in the world. By 2100, it is predicted that Muslims will outnumber Christians in the world. But, that doesn't mean Muslims want to take over the world. The radicals? Yeah, they want some awful things. The normal people? Mostly we just want to live our lives. Go to school, get jobs, get married, raise families, etc..

The vast majority of Muslims are normal people. But what you have to understand is the role of media. Normal people doing normal things don't make good news stories. Crazy people doing evil things do. So there are a bunch of radicals, and they are widely condemned by the majority of the Muslim population. But the media doesn't report on that. A sensational story would be to focus on the handful of crazies. Like with the horrible rape attacks in Cologne. They were supposedly committed by Muslims/Arabs, but there were Muslims who helped and defended the women, too. For every bad Muslim there are 100 good ones. (Rape is against Islam, by the way.)

The Quran is actually full of scientific thought. It contains things that illiterate desert dwellers could not possibly have known 1400 years ago. It details the microscopic stages of pregnancy. It holds evidence for evolution and the Big Bang, and the origin of life from water (Quran 21:30). It even alludes to possible extraterrestrial life, as God is referred to as "Lord of ALL the Worlds."

While Islam as a "world religion" technically began 1400 years ago, Muslims believe Islam is much older. The word "Islam" means "peace and submission to God." "Muslim" means "one who submits to God." We believe that the Torah, the Psalms, and the Bible are all divinely inspired, though flawed through human error. Muslims believe in Abraham, Moses, Jesus, etc.. We believe they were all Muslims (aka people who followed God.) We believe that Islam is the oldest religion on earth in the sense that every religion stemmed from ancient interpretations of Islam (aka interpretations of the Word of God). We believe Muhammad was the final prophet of God. Meaning, now that God's Word has been preserved, there will not be any other prophets or people visited by angels.

I used to be a staunch atheist. I believed the same about religion, that it was all nonsense that made people feel like they mattered. That religion was simply a tool to control people. Now I see that is not the case. This world holds more good than evil, though the evil is abundant. This world is not all there is. Religion can be a force of good in the world. For example, one of the most important principles of Islam is that of charity. Muslims are required to do good deeds and give to charity, because part of being a Muslim is helping your fellow man.

I hope I was able to answer your questions. If you have any other questions, I'll try to answer them, inshallah.
