What are the ups and downs of own a mastiff

I actually do not know that, sorry to say. But there are plenty of resources to find out! When we were looking to adopt our dog, we did plenty of research. We got videos from the local library talking on the ups and downs of dog breeds (I don't know the movies name, though, since I was 11 at the time, but there are many similar videos out there). We also researched online, and through breed books (also at the library, of course).Β
Though, truthfully, one thing I can say is some of the downs and ups depend on personal taste. If you want a dog that won't crush you with it's weight when you want to cuddle, a big breed may not be the best choice. Vice versa, if you want something you can hug firmly without injuring it, small breeds like chihuahua's aren't good either.
I personally love dogs in the medium size range. They are sturdy enough to withstand crazy kids and big hugs, and can feel more like you are owning a dog than an accessory, while still being small enough to cuddle or get in a rough and tumble play with.
I also would suggest looking into a mixed breed, or a mutt. Tests have shown that mutts are less likely to get sick, have serious health issues, and so forth, than dogs who are pure bred. Therefore, you are more likely to have a longer life and a healthier dog if you don't go pure bred. So if you really want a mastiff, but want a mutt, get a mixed breed containing mastiff to help get the favored mastiff qualities while also having the benefits of a mutt.
I hope this helps a bit on your question. Sorry I don't know more about mastiffs.
