Hi!
I have the opportunity to join a reenactment group for the 2nd half of 15th century and knowing your dresses of Italy in this time I thought of contacting you Could you give me some sources oder book titles for research or inspiration or is it just looking into painting details? I have some experience with Renaissance clothing yet, but Italy and Early Renaissance is quite a new terrain for me.

Your clothes are fantastic! DO you mind if I ask what part of Australia you are from? My partner [also a photographer] and I are based on the Central Coast, NSW and I for one would love to work with you and some of your beautiful creations!

Welcome to Medieval Minds! Be sure to submit some of your amazing period pieces to our cosplay folder!
We get quite a few cosplayers/whatever and I was wondering 1) How accurate are your 'costumes' as in, do you make it from the traditional methods and materials originally used? and 2) Do you just like the fashion or do you like all of the historical stuff too?
Thanks!

Thanks. I have already submitted to the "medieval arts and crafts" gallery as the title for the other gallery appeared to me more focused of fantasy-medieval (unrealistic cosplay) and I don't do any cosplay.
I re-enact 1480 Florece. There aren't any extant gaments for this style, but there are from the 14th and 16th century so I extrapolate using period art, diary entries, wardrobe accounts and so on.
Using this informaion I make my own patterns and almost all my 1480 stuff is hand sewn using the stitches and seam treatments I believe they would have used. The fabric is all what was around then and in colours they wuld have had, but where I live you can't get wool so a lot is linen instead of wool. My fabric also dyed with modern dyes, I just make sure the colour could have been achieved with period dyes. Most of my faric is machine woven etc.
I wear all of the correct underlayers (for example I don't go around wearing a modern bra). All my lacing ties used to fasten my garments are made by fingerloop braiding using braid patterns from a 1470 manuscript.
Basically my clothing is as good as I can get it in the location I live in.
I don't just like the fashion, as a re-enactor I learn a lot about the period as we try to reproduce the life, but I am very interested in history in general.
Thank you for your interest.

Aha apologes, I forgot we had a better folder xD Ousted on my own group!
I've always wondered if garments people made were realistic, it's nice to know you are doing your best! Looking at your stuff is a really good indication of what the people would of looked like, which I've always had the most trouble imagining, far too often I think of drab looking people in brown or dull clothing (which to be fair, is how they're ussually depicted!).
I know a few people who like the fashion and dressing up from that era who didn't really understand the context much, which is a shame.
Good job on your work and I hope you enjoy your time at Medieval Minds!

you're welcome! Thank you for sharing your art! Part of me would really love to get into woodwork because it woul be useful for makng things for re-enactment. The main part of me thinks I wouldn'tbe any good and that I can't keep up with the hobbies I have. So I shall admire from afar!

Thanks! Yes, my re-enactment group does Italian (1480) and we chose it because no other local re-enactment groups were doing it. Since then a few have pushed their period later but none still do Italian.
Sorry for the very belated comment, I have been absent from LJ but am now returning!

Just wanted to pop in and say how much I appreciate the details you put into your artist's comments! I love being able to read about the clothing in reference to the period and how they were made and all that.

You have lovely costumes and excellent tutorials! Think someday I'll make myself a dress!
Actually, do you have any idea where I can find instructions on how to make a hippolande (I think that's how it's spelled)? I'm having a hard time finding anything about them, and I think they're lovely.

Kathelyne In reply to GingerOpal [2009-10-26 05:19:38 +0000 UTC]
Thank you!
There are two main methods for a houppelande, the 'just like a big dress' one, and some kind of circular plan. They're the two that I know of anyway.
if you have heaps of fabric this pattern [link] makes a great one- just watch it can eat up fabric!
I don't have any ther.links off hand, but a search for houppelande pattern and similar things will get a fair amount of results.
