LittleLeonard [2012-01-02 17:52:45 +0000 UTC]

Hey dude! saw your Wolverine Model - just a few questions about working with clay: can you start your model and continue with it at different times, or do you have to start and finish the model in one go, because I have been told that if you leave a model unfinished and resume it later, the clay will crack....is this true??
Thanks!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JamesMarsano In reply to LittleLeonard [2012-01-02 18:45:49 +0000 UTC]

lol yes it will but it wont crack for a while, if you leave it in two to 6 months its still fine.. i left my last wolverine (the grey sculpture) unfinished for a year, now all of the parts of his body is cracking.. (i left him unfinished because i thought the proportions were off and i was just getting pissed off at it) BUT yes. you can continue to work with it at different times.. sculpey is an oil based clay, you can always reactivate it again with alcohol and knead it.. I do work with alcohol a lot.. but you dont wanna use too much, it will cause the clay to break, what it really does to the clay is that it dissolves / breaks down the clay, it softens it.
and i use two different kind of clay, mixed into one.
2/3 super sculpey beige, 1/3 sculpey firm. it makes a nice consistency of the clay, its not too soft yet its not too hard to work with,
the firm has more tendency to crack, because its like a wax.
you're welcome

Thanks so much! I have been trying to research this for a while because i would like to make a sculpture but i couldn't fin any information that made much sense :/
Thanks dude ~ Your ROCK!

JamesMarsano In reply to LittleLeonard [2012-01-02 19:41:46 +0000 UTC]

ahahah yeah that's how i was when i started using the clay.. i always ended up on a weird website that has nothing to do with my problem lol
i joined the statueforum and been a lurker ever since i started sculpting just to see how people treat the clay and what other options are possible.
hey no probs hit me up anytime if you have anymore questions, i'd be glad to help you out.

I'm not sure...I was going to make Kitty from X-Men...but it will probs fail the first time around, but hopefully it will end up looking like her :/

JamesMarsano In reply to LittleLeonard [2012-01-02 20:05:15 +0000 UTC]

advice,

sculpt the main figure, dont focus on the detail. focus on the planes, proportion, lines of action, the pose, figure out the pose. and you will need to cosntruct that armature.

make sure to use references for the anatomy. I use a lot of george bridgman books.. i picked them up from amazon. they are pretty cheap, yet its one of the best anatomy books out there

likeness on the face could be done later on, face is what you want to do last.. if this is a figurative sculpture you want to be doing
basically just sculpt a naked body, dont even bother to get into the tertiary form and secondary form (details, clothing, wrinkles, likeness, textures) until youre done with the primary form which is the figure itself.

you want to make sure that the armature is very sturdy if its a standing pose.

If you really are serious about sculpting, pick up the pop sculpture book from amazon. its like a sculptor's bible lol

I shall definately be reffering back to this - all the hours i have spent surfing the net and you have given me more valuable information in 3 messages...
and indeed, i shall look at buying one of those books ~
If I manage to successfully finish the sculpture, I shall upload it a pic...if its crap...I'll just...keep at it - until its non-crap ~yay~
