Thanks for the fave -- in Albuquerque, I got the chance to add a new record for my "farthest-west Civil War site visited." Β I haven't been to Shiloh, or Vicksburg, or Pea Ridge, but by golly I got to see the site of the "Battle" of Albuquerque

You're welcome. I love cannons, my dad and I want to get one so that we can get together a cannon crew. We know a guy that would be able to train us in firing, maintaining, and safety. I've been to Pea Ridge and was chased by bees there. It was very beautiful there. I've been to New Mexico and even Albuquerque, but never been to that site. Have you been to Honey Springs?

Indeed! Β In this set of pictures I was clearly a bit obsessed, but I'd never seen mountain howitzers up close before. Β They are standing in for originals which were buried by the Confederates when they vacated Albuquerque, and later stood in the town square for a long time before they were packed off to a museum. Β It's awesome that you have a contact who can set you up with cannon instruction -- I imagine there are a good many more safety protocols doing that than there are for the average infantryman

I hope you got away from the bees! Β But it sounds like you may have been faithfully reenacting the 132nd PA's experience on the Roulette Farm at Antietam

Sadly, I have not really been to any of the Western Theater or Trans-Mississippi battlefields -- which is really a travesty, considering I am always arguing to my colleagues that the war waswon or lost in the West. Β It's amazing how the Eastern-centric view of the war has persisted from 1861 to the present day. Β Do you have experience at Honey Springs? Β I would assume that battle gets overshadowed by the other, better-known events of July 1863.

I wanted to see the Glorieta Pass Battlefield while I was in Albuquerque -- that battle was much more significant than the glorified skirmish at Albuquerque itself -- but couldn't find the time. Β And, technically, I did pass through Vicksburg during a drive to Texas once, but the car didn't stop, so I don't count that one at all

This guy is very safety oriented, but then again he was hurt in a cannon accident, so he tries very hard to make sure no one else is hurt.

We go away from the bees, it happened several years ago when we were on vacation. It was before I ever thought about reenacting. We always go to historical places on vacation.

I've been to two reenactments at Honey Springs, but it isn't much if there isn't a reenactment going on. I know that they were raising money for a visitors center, but I doubt it has been constructed yet.Β  The reenactment happens in the spring time, too many people are afraid of heat stroke if it was done in July considering Oklahoma summers can easily get into the 100s. I think they are having it again this year, but I'm not sure. I'd have to do some research. It's nice for a small battle.

Ouch. Β I can understand why he is so dedicated to safety.

Amen to going to historical sites for vacations! Β Though (at least in my family) there was always at least one family member who complained

I can understand why the battle tends to get reenacted in the spring -- that's not the first case of this type I've heard of. Β Do you get many "Native American reenactors" (that is, people portraying Native American troops) at the reenactments? Β That's a very under-appreciated aspect of the war, and I'd love to hear that it was getting some publicity.

Honey Springs is going to be in November this year, they changed it on us.
We don't get a lot of Native American reenactors at Honey Springs, however at a small reenactment we have in Yale, Ok we have a group that always dresses up as Native American's. It was the Battle of Round Mountain, I'm not really sure if that is it's proper title, but that is what everyone calls it. We normally reenact the Native American side of it on Sunday, with most of the Union dressing in their Native American clothes, there is even a small hand to hand combat scenario.

There are only three of us, well four now that my grandma goes with us on vacation and we all love history so there is no complaining.

I loved the movie when I was little, forced my mom to watch it so many times. I wish I could see it as a play.
