Thank you so much! Your artwork is also awesome! I think we're striving for similar things when it comes to style. I also want to achieve a more realistic anime style. Dave Rapoza is a very good fan artist, and he also talks a lot about what he looks for and what he keeps in design when creating a fanart with a realistic rendition in mind. You can simply google him and see his amazing portfolio.

It's also nice to see a fellow Christian artist as well. Thank you for visiting my page, and God bless.

Thanks! Absolutely! I hope I can sometime down the road add a bit of an American comic influence also, and maybe go for a hybrid style like Stanley Lau or Daxiong. I've seen Rapoza'a name come up a lot, I love his rendering, it's simply breathe-taking! I'll definitely have to look up some of his writing , thanks!
It is very refreshing to connect with other Christian artists

It's always good to change it up, and explore different styles. Dave is a funny fellow, you can find many of his videos on Youtube where he would give 2+ hour long critiques and paint over work. It's great to catch little tid bits of info to look out for when painting, but honestly, can be quite tedios to sit there for so long. I usually watch videos like that when I'm in my rendering state where I just make stuff look pretty and don't have to think about the science behind it all!

How many more Cons are you thinking of doing? (and how did it go at MegaCon?)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

To-Ka-Ro In reply to GabeRamos [2015-04-27 00:16:55 +0000 UTC]

Absolutely! I know some people stress consistency, but my whole thought process is how can one get consistency if one doesn't experiment first?
For videos on rendering, I watch a lot of Sycra and CubeBrush (Mark Brunet or BlueFley on here) . What's interesting about both of their critique series is that they actually paint over and correct works that artists post in their forums, so it helps me see problems directly and solutions to those problems. Dave's videos do sound amazing, but yes, watching a rendering video for 2+ hours does seem a bit tedious ( I probably would have to watch the videos in bits and pieces, and not all at once).

I think I'll be doing a couple more cons this year. I'll be doing OMNI Expo at the end of May, then I'm thinking about possibly doing Holiday Matsuri in December. This was my third year doing AA at MegaCon, and it went pretty awesome this time around (especially compared with last year, last year was horrible)! My friend from Philly was with me and it was his first AA, and he did really good for his first year. Are you doing any conventions coming up?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GabeRamos In reply to To-Ka-Ro [2015-04-27 13:55:07 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, those are called paintovers. They became popular with Imaginism's schoolism series (popular online) because in those schools the instructors would paint over the work to show you how to make it better. Dave Rapoza and Daniel Warren made a forum called Crimson Daggers, which was the first to provide illustration education for free (in comparison to every other place that offered a similar service, but at a price), and they would select works from their forums and paint over them. Not many of those videos survived, as they were streamed and not uploaded to Youtube per se, since Youtube wasn't so big then. They still stream, though not as often as before where it was 5 hours of studying in streams daily and then some paintovers. I love those guys, I learnt so much. This is an example of one of the videos: www.youtube.com/watch?v=xohdN4…

It's awesome that other artists came up to continue what they started. I love to watch Cubebrush's critiques from the contests, I learn a lot from them, and Mark is a good instructor when it comes to explaining stuff. Sycra is another one, I've seen most of his tutorials and I always end up wanting more!!! Hahaha. I'm sure you're also familiar with Feng Zhu. His style is more of industrial art, but one could learn a bit of environmental art by looking at his stuff.

As far as conventions go, I've never been in an AA, though I am looking into the Artist Alley Association you told me about. I realized I didn't think of many things I'd have to invest in prior to attending (very worth investing in).
I wanted to attend a couple of cons before I move to China. The main reason is to expose myself and meet awesome people, but of course there also the nice financial side at the end of the investment. What made last year so bad?

I'm sure I could learn so much from your experience if you don't mind sharing them! I was thinking of going to MizuCon, in Miami but it's a very small convention and after making calculations I wonder if it's worth the investment considering I still need to make work for it.

Anyways, if you'd prefer, we can continue the conversation via notes, rather than on the profile!

I also recently finished a piece, and made a "speedpaint" video of the whole process, if you're interested in seeing how I work.

To-Ka-Ro In reply to GabeRamos [2015-05-07 05:07:50 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, I've heard of Crimson Daggers before, it's mostly for concept art, right? I've heard Sycra mention that site before.
I really like paintovers, they help me analyze my own work a lot better.

I haven't seen any of Feng Zhu's work before, but I've had heard his name around, so I'll definitely have to look up his work
I want to start to venture into learning environments , so that would be a good reference.

There's a lot of little investments here and there I wouldn't have even thought about starting out, like investing in an emergency kit, back boards, etc.
Woah, China?? That's a big move! Do you have some connections over in China?

Ugh, many many things made last year bad. I did a review of last year you can read here (warning, it is pretty long)  MEGACON 2014 ReviewWelcome to the convention season!
Here in Florida, the con season starts up in early spring, and goes mostly into the later fall, the last cons dwindling until eventually early December (Holiday Matsuri being one). Additionally, being in Florida means there is a LOT of conventions available for attendance , the major cities for which being Orlando (Central Florida), Tampa (West coast/Golf Coast Florida), and Miami (South Eastern Florida). Cue the season of sweltering in costumes, trying to figure out hotel booking, and spending lots of money on gas and food- but in the end, it's all worth it for the fun
The reason I bring this up is to bring attention to the role MegaCon plays into this. MegaCon is one of the first major cons (if not the first ) of Florida's convention season (its location in Orlando, FL). In a sense, almost everyone I know that does the "convention circuit" talks about and attends it because it really helps announce that con season has officially started. T

Sure! I'm all about spreading useful information as much as possible. I've never heard of that convention, since I usually don't do cons in that area, but I'm sure if you ask on AANI, someone is bound to know.

Just send me a note over whenever I'll check it out when I can

You changed your name?!?! haha awesome, but I was wondering why you changed it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GabeRamos In reply to xoes [2015-04-06 11:35:38 +0000 UTC]

Because the last one was a name I made up 7-8 years ago, and reflects nothing of me as an artist. It'd also be hard for people from outside to find my work through a name that only exists here and I no longer use. My name and last name were taken already, so I opted for nickname and last name.

Main reason: Easy to find me, don't need to spell it out to people if I can only talk to them for a sec, cohesive with my other sites and portfolio, and good to have on my name card when I give it to people.

xoes In reply to GabeRamos [2015-04-06 16:36:01 +0000 UTC]

Alright it makes sense. I liked the old name though it was unique, but I understand why you would want to change it to something that people would see and recognize as you. Especially if you've left the name behind a long time ago.
