Hello! I've been researching for making my own doll, and I came across your beautiful gallery! Since I'm also using Ladoll clay, I have a small question I hope you can answer? I know you use Tamiya primer and Mr Surfacer, but is it just for casting? Can it also be painted on and give the doll a smooth finish (or is it too smooth for painting the original doll?)

Thank you!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FreakStyleARTist In reply to FuzzySheepChild [2015-06-11 09:27:47 +0000 UTC]

To be honest, I don't think Tamiya and Mr. Surfacer are very good as a primer for painting. The coating is pretty vulnerable, so you'd have to be very careful with your doll.

These primers are meant to fill up small irregularities. If you'd like to know what materials to use so you're able to paint your product, I'd suggest you browse the miniature model forums (although, they paint over plastics). And the most important thing: Experiment. Please, do not prepare your entire sculpt, until you're certain the materials do what you want them to.

Would you ever consider making tutorials?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FreakStyleARTist In reply to kworking [2014-12-13 12:27:37 +0000 UTC]

Well, making tutorials is a lot of work and I don't really have much time to work on my sculpts, so for now I'd have to say "No". There are quite a few tutorials out there though .

I heard bad things about Freak Style and looked you up. I think they are all wrong. Your style is amazing. I really love Salomé's body, the curves and the hips are wonderful. If I had the money I would buy one in a heartbeat.

Did you mean those confessions on Tumblr? I had no idea what that was about. Of course everyone has different tastes and my dolls are not everyone's cup of tea, but they made it sound like I created something hideous.

Glad you like her .

Well, I don't think I'm the right person to do a tutorial. I have a very ... *cough* 'artistic' way of working (meaning that it's an absolute chaos). Depending on what works that day, or what I need, I change methods constantly.

Lucky for you, there are quite a few tutorials you can find on the internet. Here are some of them:

dreamscreator.thousandmirrors.… - A way to make a doll head.

aspiredall.blogspot.nl/2008/09… - This tutorial covers both head sculpting and body  sculpting. Note how she uses a different neck joint than usual.

translate.google.com/translate… - this is also a good tutorial, but originally written in Japanese. The version here is a google translate one.

And there are many more. Just take a look on the internet (youtube has quite a few movies about this topic) and see what works for you. Good luck!

Thank you so so so much!! I'm sure I'll find this very helpful. And I get the 'artistic" way of working; I'm the same way with arts and crafts kind of stuff. But again, thank you so much!!!

Free-Falling [2013-06-12 20:24:33 +0000 UTC]

Hi there! I just came across your dolls today and I gotta say, that's some amazing work you put into them! Just wondering, as a person starting out wanting to make dolls to sell, what sort of tips do you have? Also, do the feet require weights for them to stand properly?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FreakStyleARTist In reply to Free-Falling [2013-07-04 11:13:52 +0000 UTC]

If you want the doll to be able to stand (like they should ), it's most important that the doll body is balanced. The left side should be just as heavy as the right side and the doll shouldn't be top heavy.

As for selling tips:
1. It might sound kinda contrary, but... don't make dolls because you want to sell them, make them because you like sculpting. To be honest, this isn't a lucrative market. It's oversaturated with doll companies, the sales are going slow and the current economy isn't helping. If you'd only make them for financial reasons, I think you're going to be disappointed. Most likely you won't make any profit at all; you'll just make enough to cover the cost of producing dolls.

2. Know your audience. Who are you selling to? What age are they, what is their disposable income, what is it they are looking for in a doll? Etc, etc. The more informed you are, the more likely your company has a chance of survival.

3. Try to find a niche. Make sure that your doll stands out from the crowd.

4. Above all: have fun!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FreakStyleARTist In reply to 0ArmoredSoul0 [2013-05-26 11:30:25 +0000 UTC]

Thanks you so much! I have to say that I do like the teenage boy look, but I just don't like sculpting them. In my home there is a distinct difference between my own doll collection and the dolls I sculpt .

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

0ArmoredSoul0 In reply to FreakStyleARTist [2013-05-26 18:52:11 +0000 UTC]

Heh, that's neat. I don't mind the teenage look, I just don't particularly care to have it in my collection.
In all honesty, I've been looking for a scuplt that either mimics the Sniper from Team Fortress 2 or Eddie Riggs from Brutal Legend. Mmmm~ Trained assassin/heavy metal rocker.
