👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FakeKraid In reply to julietcaesar [2012-04-04 18:00:07 +0000 UTC]

I have a full-time job, which is nice. It's night-shift, at that, so I have time during the day to do other things as needed. I'm discouraged on my writing, which, whatever anyone else say, I still feel is sub-par in terms of plot structuring and characterization, but I'm not going to give up. Maybe I'll go back to short stories for a while. I'm part of an actual indie game studio now, which is nice, and gives me a chance to play with game narrative, which is a subject to which I have given a great deal of thought.

How about you? How have you been adjusting to your return to normal society? I seem to recall that you had been having some anxiety issues over a return to public school, or maybe due to a move? How has your mood been lately?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

julietcaesar In reply to FakeKraid [2012-04-05 01:22:38 +0000 UTC]

Wow, congratulations! I'm glad things have worked out in terms of a reasonable, stable full-time job, and one that gives you time for your writing. I know how you feel about writing being sub-par- I haven't been writing as much as I should be. Game narrative sounds interesting as well. Would you envision yourself as a story writer for a particular game one day?

Well, I've graduated high school and currently study law and media as a double degree at university. In Australia, I can do law at an undergraduate level, provided that I combine law with another degree. I never seriously considered law until I got my exam marks back, which were much better than expected and I thought I'll give it a shot because I didn't really want to be stuck with an arts degree that may or may not be useful to gain future employment anywhere, and learning about law is the sort of intellectual challenge that I like. So far, it's been pretty good so far. The anxiety is still present and the moods still swing, but I've been coping better than before thanks to the mentors here and just figuring out some methods of my own.

FakeKraid In reply to julietcaesar [2012-04-05 09:06:58 +0000 UTC]

That's really neat! I don't know if you speak as you write, but whether or not you do, your skill with language would serve you very will in the field of law. I considered it once myself, but the US legal system is so completely corrupt at this point that getting into law practice would mean either compromising my principles or being seen as a failure by 99% of my peers.

I'm glad to hear you're coping. I figured you would; your willingness to confront the issue instead of hiding from it - or behind it - was a good sign that you would. I'm glad you gave me a message, too. Please do keep in touch, and I wish you the best of luck in university!

julietcaesar In reply to FakeKraid [2012-04-05 11:08:59 +0000 UTC]

I'm definitely a lot better at writing than speaking, but some mooting and debating experience in the future would hopefully bring that up to speed. I always knew there was going to be a steep learning curve, but that hasn't daunted me overly except for a few moments in time. That's expected anyway. I don't think the Australian legal system is as corrupt here- in the law curriculum anyway, there's a whole semester dedicated to ethics and professionalism of a lawyer, and it's something emphasised heavily throughout law school.

I do hope we keep in touch! I had been wondering where you went, and recently I saw you posting in the HWL forum, so I thought I would come by and say hello.

FakeKraid In reply to BelleJalousie [2012-01-30 12:31:34 +0000 UTC]

Oh! Hello there. I am doing...about as well as I was last time we spoke. Things don't change very quickly when you get to be old and obsolete like me.

I do have a (marginally) better job than I did, so that's one thing, I guess. It's less strenuous than what I've been doing and leaves me with lots of free time. How about yourself? How goes your integration into "ordinary" society? (Am I remembering the right person? I seem to recall that you were returning to public school after some time outside the system, but I might be getting you confused with someone else)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BelleJalousie In reply to FakeKraid [2012-01-31 05:25:44 +0000 UTC]

A better job is always good, even if it's only slightly better than the last one. Though I believe I would go insane with a lot of free time..

You're definitely remembering the right person. Things are going alright; I just missed a week of school due to having a stomach flu that ended with a sinus infection, so I'm currently freaking out because of all the work I have to get done and how behind I'll be getting back into things.. But aside from that, life's been alright. Trying to keep myself from spiraling down again, but as long as I keep myself busy things seem to be okay.

FakeKraid In reply to craazhy [2011-12-29 20:19:34 +0000 UTC]

Oh, stuff. You know.

Actually, since we last chatted, I have:

1. Gotten a new job, one with loads of unsupervised down time in an office with no cameras
2. Begun a novel project, a better one than my last and one that it looks like I could actually bring to completion
3. Met Nobuo Uematsu, briefly

Yourself?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

craazhy In reply to FakeKraid [2011-12-29 20:50:34 +0000 UTC]

I do know.

1. I barely remember my life, its been so unattractively hectic. That sounds kinky. I'm a grunt, currently making the money to spend on the unbelievably asinine process of joining the USMC.
2. I'm at around 150 pages on mine.
3. Oh. (wikipedia) OHHHhh.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FakeKraid In reply to craazhy [2012-01-07 16:36:30 +0000 UTC]

Yes, THAT Nobuo Uematsu.

Anyway, 150 pages is many more than I have. But, I guess I tend to work slowly and perfectionist-ly. I have a hard time cutting loose, so I've been doing a ton of world-building and plot-planning to give myself more of a foundation. So far it's working out, I think.

Oh, hello there. What a coincidence; the first time I log on in a while, and you're here.

Things are going...sort of okay, I suppose. I'm employed, which is good, and it's an 'Einstein job' (lots of down-time in an unwatched office), which is better. I'm back into writing again, which is still better. Yourself?

jswebb In reply to FakeKraid [2011-09-28 21:23:29 +0000 UTC]

I'm doing all right; much of the same over here. I am employed as a technical writer, so I'm writing all of the time in some form, but I have been trying to write creatively, simply because I miss it.

FakeKraid In reply to jswebb [2011-09-28 21:42:40 +0000 UTC]

Hey, it's good to be employed AT ALL right now, so I'm happy for you. Do you have any larger-scale projects of your own, or is it still short stories and poetry?

jswebb In reply to FakeKraid [2011-09-29 01:08:46 +0000 UTC]

I've been working on some movie scripts for a few months, but I still write a lot of poetry as well.

FakeKraid In reply to jswebb [2011-09-29 21:09:15 +0000 UTC]

Sounds good. I've got a book on blacksmithing open in front of me right now. I don't feel right trying to write a scene about it without more detailed knowledge than I currently possess. I wonder if part of the fascination of fantasy with blacksmiths these days isn't in part due to the fact that he has no analogue in modern culture? That is, he represents a perfect unification of brute, physical labor with artistic creativity, something that we consider almost paradoxical in our industrialized, automated society, but which would have seemed quite natural then.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jswebb In reply to FakeKraid [2011-09-29 21:13:56 +0000 UTC]

I've always been fascinated by artisan crafts like blacksmithing. It's very awe-inspiring to see a master take raw, brute materials and craft something beautiful out of it - I think that even practical objects, such as swords, have a bit of beauty in them.

I'm very happy to hear you're grounding your work in the actual world, though; it always pains me to see writers that are younger than us (and even those our age or older) try to evoke emotion without knowing why those things in the real world evoke emotion originally.
