How do proceed your studies about landscapes?

I have two different methods.
The first one is the easiest, I take a picture I like and I redraw it and try to find the right colors and lights. It's really fun if you want to work composition or textures. It makes me practice a lot of different landscapes as well. Usually I try to take those reference images from films I like!
The second takes a little bit more time! I usually begin with an idea and a palette. I try to find references of the type of environement I want to paint (for exemple Mountains, Canyons, Forest) and I work with basic shapes and colors to find a right composition. Once I have a composition I like, I try to define where I'm going to put the light, just to see if it works. Then I begin to add details, always with my references on the side to work with the right textures and colors! I keep changing things in my composition till the end, adding objects or correcting the light. During the work, I keep in mind the main ambiance that I want in my drawing! When it seems to be finished, I make a little pause and I come back after a while to see if I can make it better!
That's how I work! What's your process?

Both of them are similar to my first idea to proceed, but I usually work like this: direct inspirations and draw.
I think I need to put some more technical intentions in my method; I like to draw 'free' but sometmes I loose the sense of 'concrete space'. ^^
