I have no problem with gays, actually I can't stand homophobes =/ So I watch a couple of yaoi artists on DA for their art in general and artistic value, not their couple pictures (I usually just avoid the yaoi couple pictures). I know it's unusual for someone to support gays and not like yaoi, but yeah

I just have a question, reading your conversation with a guy who supported Vrella. You said "Looking at something and drawing it freehand is still copying dear, sorry to break it to you."
I'm just curious cause now I'm suspecting my own art class's work, we're using photographs or pictures from art books and the internet to paint a picture on a canvas, we don't trace but draw what we see (lines), then transfer it onto our boards.. My art teacher who's about 50+ years old does the same method, he taught us to do that..
Would everything that we do in a art class be bad because we're copying someone else work?

As far as I know the picture has to be public property or you have to own the copyright to it... but now -when- it's public property I'm not sure of. I want to read more about this too, since I enjoy doing portraits from cd covers for fun myself. If I find out more, I'll let you know.
I do know older art teachers are used to this, I've been teached about "re-reading" paintings as a technique of sorts (I've no idea about the term, in portuguese it's called "re-leitura"), and had to do works on this. Also I've had one teacher talk me into "referencing" an image from the internet and changing it slightly... Personally I think it would be ok if I changed it a lot, but it just looks like the "re-reading", or a different version of the original.
But I think what that girl I was arguing with was doing, copying drawn pictures exactly as they are, would be reproduction of the original, so she should have kept from posting those.
