I really loved your art for Claudia's Story, it was so lush and wonderfully detailed, perfectly capturing the atmosphere of Anne Rice's prose ^^ But what I really admired was the way you draw hands, the way you can see practically every muscle and joint. Do you have any tips for hand drawing?

WittA In reply to DominiqueDuong [2013-08-03 15:20:09 +0000 UTC]

Study hand anatomy, that's my one tip.

I learned a lot about the human anatomy from taking college figure drawing classes for several years. Understanding the bone, muscle, tendon and vein structure and proportions of hands really helps. You can always use your own hands for reference. Surprisingly, I learned more about hands from watching people sculpt them out of polymer clay.

Thanks ^^ I've started doing that lately when I've been drawing, if I can't figure out a pose or can't get it right I'll try and reference my own.

Greetings, Ashley!

I was analyzing the pages of your comics, and I was struck by the way in which they are made. Are they completely made in pencil? I assume you've used the levels tool in photoshop or something similar to made them look this way. It seems you don´t use ink in any case. If so, have you had any problems when they were published physically?
Sorry for the questions, but I wonder how your pages are made :S

By the way, thanks you for sharing your art! ^ ^

WittA In reply to Gelorum [2013-06-19 16:23:05 +0000 UTC]

You're absolutely right, those are in pencil.

Claudia's Story was a full-color novel so the printing was done differently. Most printed books are done in inks with halftones because you're only dealing with two values instead of RGB. Color printing picks up more values than black and white (which is just straight black OR white). I don't know how it was officially done, I'm just going off of my experience with printing since my Dad owns a print shop.

Ok, so Claudia's Story was made in pencil but published in color...

Reign of Adeodatus was made in pencil, too?

But, have you ever published a comic, done with your technique in pencil, that was not published in color?

Sorry for so many questions, but I need to know :SS

WittA In reply to Gelorum [2013-06-20 04:14:30 +0000 UTC]

Not a problem. I love answering questions about this stuff, if it's in any way helpful.

RoA alternated between pencil and ink. Belfry Twins was done in pencil and watercolor. I think that book was printed in grayscale actually.

I suppose you could print a comic that's drawn in pencil, in black and white. You might lose some of the tone unless the levels are adjusted enough to fit the B/W specs. But really... you can do just about anything with printing these days. Did you have a specific problem you're struggling with?

Gelorum In reply to WittA [2013-06-20 15:05:09 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. I have some issues, indeed. It´s something it´s driving me crazy, and I don´t now what to do.
When I discover your art (Claudia's Story pages specifically), a few days ago, I felt relieve and happy ´cause somebody was using the technique I was looking for my comic book. But if it was published in color does not help me much...

I would love you to see 2 or 3 pages of my comic book and give me your professional opinion about the "pencil-and-publish" problem I´m trying to explain, but I still can´t upload and make public in the web the pages of my comic book. I can only submit character designs or this promotional kind of stuff [link] And I do not think it's a good idea to be spamming your deviantart with comments about this issue XDDD

Anyway, thank you very much for your consideration (and for your art! ^^).

WittA In reply to Gelorum [2013-06-20 15:42:56 +0000 UTC]

I thought that might be the case. I did look through your work before. Your line quality is really clean so you don't have much to worry about. You'd be surprised there are a few artists who work exclusively in pencil.

It's true, most comic companies will ask for inked art. How Claudia's Story came to be; the company saw what I'd done with Reign of Adeodatus and specifically asked for that style. Something I hadn't thought of doing professionally.

Fact is, YES, you can print an entire book done in pencil. The only real problem with that is how much you're able to pay for it. Usually, you'd let a company figure that out for you (they pay for it). But if you're going DIY and printing it yourself well you have all the options in the world! You could probably get away with grayscale printing, that would maintain your values and not cost the price of color comics. To my understanding, once you're in the business of creating comics it's actually not *that* expensive. Especially if you save up for it.

Wow... thanks for your information. I really needed to read something like that to lift the mood and to find a reason to keep drawing (my artistic mood is in doldrums lately... XDD). I´m feeling I´m very far from achieving the goal of publishing. Practically all companies want inked art but I´m feeling fine with my "pencil-style".
To publishing for a company is practically impossible nowadays, and the fact of adapt my "weirdthing/manga/pencil" style to publishers requirements demoralizes me XDDD
By the way, thank you so much for taking your time to answer my ramblings, he! XDD
You already had got my admiration with your art, but you've got an eternal fan with your kindness, ha! XP
